Hi,
The Sports for Nature Team is busy this week! We are continuing to promote our Green Ticket Initiative going on during the Wizards and San Antonio Spurs game at the Verizon Center on Saturday, February 12th. Ticket sales have picked up and we hope it continues that way as fans that buy through our link will not pay any fees and for each ticket sold the Wizards donate $10 to one of our green charities, a win-win situation for everyone!
Also great news, due to our tennis trips to Costa Rica selling out, we are now adding a 5th tennis trip this season to Paradisus Playa Conchal during the week of March 14th. So far we have a few people interested and hope to complete this trip very soon! Weather down in Costa Rica during March will be an average of 85 degrees and sunny everyday, so it’ll be a lot better than up here in DC, where we had an ice storm yesterday, ouch!
Sports for Nature is all about connecting sports and the environment and we are constantly looking for new ways to do so. So please continue sending us your suggestions and ideas, we love to hear what you think about what we do! We think that when sports and nature go hand in hand, it’s good business for everyone.
Before I get back to work, and in relation to our daily lives, I’d like to mention some tips that will help nature and also reduce your expenses (a very good thing nowadays in this so so economy!). I think that it is easy being green, and the good news is that most times, it saves you money.
My first tip is simple, unplug things. TV’s, cell phone chargers, DVD players, mini toaster ovens, etc., basically anything that you might not use in days. If they are plugged, they are using energy, and it’s costing you. So when you can, try to unplug these items and have a nice smile on your face next time you get your power bill in the mail!
Another example of how going green saves you money is switching from bottled water to filtered tap water. The average US family spends about $1,500 a year on bottled water, and 95% of the plastic bottles used are not recycled. Remember that for less than $80 you can get a high quality water filter to make your tap water perfect. So please consider this option and start saving money and helping the environment at the same time.
Another tip that I know we have all heard before but I think it’s worth mentioning is to try to walk and cycle whenever you can. Even if it’s an extra block here and there, you are still helping nature, being more active and saving money.
And my last green tip … if you can, please try to read your favorite newspaper online. All newspapers are online now so you can read everything you were going to read on a printed newspaper, but on a screen. This saves tons of trees and will save you money as well. It is estimated that around 60 million newspapers are printed every day in the US. The majority of them will not be recycled. That is a lot of trees and land being used for just that, producing newspapers. Imagine if we could cut down on printed newspapers by just 5%, that small percentage would make a huge difference for the environment and help conserve many forests, plant and animal species.
Please think about these tips and whenever you can, follow them and save yourself some money while helping our environment!
Life is good, so please stay positive and have a wonderful week! Go green!
All the best,
Jorge Morera
